Can I get a limited licence for demerit points?
Yes. If you've been suspended for demerit points, you can apply for a limited licence straight away.
What's happened
Once you reach 100 demerit points within two years, NZTA suspends your licence for 3 months. The suspension notice tells you when it starts. From that date, you can't drive. Not to work, not to the shop, not "just this once".
What a limited licence does
It lets you drive during your suspension, but only for what you really need. Usually that means getting to and from work, driving for your job, or things your family can't manage without you, like the school run. The court sets the days, times, vehicles and area you can drive in.
Why demerits are the easy one
There's no waiting period with demerits. People disqualified for drink driving have to wait at least 28 days before the court can grant one. You don't, so the sooner your paperwork is done, the sooner you're back on the road.
The catch
You can't drive until your limited licence has actually been issued to you. Driving before then, or outside its rules, is a criminal offence. It adds at least 6 more months off the road, and you'd never get a limited licence for it.
